The Scents-ory series is a collection of interactive decorations created by using a variety of shapes and materials to allow babies and young children to play and stimulate their senses of sight, sound, touch, and smell. The Scents-ory series also aims to eradicate odors around the house using scented beans in shapes.

Problem Identification

How can we create a natural sensory experience for my infant that is easy to maintain and adds a nice aroma to the space?`

Determine the extent of the problem was the first step, creating a mind map, we identified key facts that played into the issues as hand.

  1. Many infant toys on the market disregard scent as part of the sensory experience, maybe because of safety concerns.

  2. Many infant toys create an artificial sensory experience using plastic and sound boxes that can annoy parents overtime

  3. Many infant toys are stored and then taken out when it’s time to play because they don’t fit with the nurseries aesthetic

  4. Infant toys are usually outgrown after 1-2 years of being used.

Ideation

We focused on trying to incorporate these odor eliminating aspects into everyday furniture and toys of the home and infants toys. The idea was so that the Scents-ory line can be incorporated into a home without taking away from the space.  We also had ideas of incorporating the product in spaces the baby will spend stagnant time in, hence the stroller and crib designs.

Prototyping

Once Final concepts were determined we went into low fidelity prototyping. We created a series of  prototypes that will allow us to text the effectiveness of the attention grabbing aspects of the product. We also wanted to include materials that we wanted to incorporate into the final concept, such as wood, resin, and bungee cord. Focusing on the baby gate prototype and the baby chandelier focused on creating the right shapes that infants can safely interact with and durable enough to last.
